Bed Rail Suffocation in Nursing Homes
Tragically, those in nursing homes and care facilities sometimes die as the result of suffocation due to negligent bed and mattress issues, which result in the resident becoming trapped between a bed rail and mattress. In these cases, often the bed mattress does not firmly meet the bed rail. As a result, there is a gap between the bed rail and the mattress.
When a resident rolls over or moves in bed, the resident’s head can come off the top of the mattress or pillow and get stuck in this gap. Residents in declining health often do not have the physical strength to raise or dislodge their head from this gap, and thus if they are in a position where they are unable to breathe, suffocation results unless they are quickly rescued.
Our Loved Ones Should Never Have to Die Such a Horrible Death
When bedrail suffocation results, we want to find out how such a tragedy was allowed to occur. In some cases, it will be because of old or improperly-sized mattresses, or other similar factors. In any event, those responsible should be held fully accountable for their negligence.
