Nursing Home Lawyer for Pittsburgh and Westmoreland County, PA

With about 365,000 people, Westmoreland County is located in Southwest Pennsylvania, just east of Pittsburgh.  Westmoreland is also home of numerous nursing homes and long-term care facilities that provide needed care for local residents.

As part of a recent PennLive study, such organization examined the amount of care provided to Pennsylvania nursing home residents during 2015 based upon publicly-available records.  A Westmoreland nursing home – Briarcliff Pavilion Health and Rehab Center – ranked as the 3rd lowest provider of care hours to residents, according to the 2016 PennLive study.

The PennLive study examined the number of hours of care provided by registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LPN), and certified nurse assistants (CNA) based upon the care documents required to be kept by nursing home facilities. In the study, PennLive noted that nursing home experts recommend that nursing home residents on average receive a minimum of 4.1 hours of care hours per day from such staff.

According to the study, however, residents at Briarcliff Pavilion Health and Rehab Center received just 2.80 hours per day, the third lowest number of hours in all Pennsylvania nursing homes that were included in the study.  The distinction for the lowest number of hours per day during that year goes to the ManorCare facility in Pottsville, which provided only 2.77 hours of care per day during 2015 (slightly fewer that Briarcliff).

Why Does The Low Number of Care Hours Matter?

Because of the relatively frail condition of most seniors in nursing homes, there is a correlation between the number of hours of skilled nursing care and whether the senior is likely to suffer from falls, bed sores, infections, or a wide variety of other ailments or injuries.  Seniors in nursing homes must receive adequate care, and not be relegated to living out their final years in pain and suffering because a facility determines that caring for them is too costly or not convenient.
